Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Doctor Cerberus Added to South Coast Rep Season

South Coast Rep has announced that it will present the world premiere of Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa’s Doctor Cerberus, as part of its 2009/2010 season. The tale of a boy who finds solace in horror movies, it will run April 11-May 2, on the Julianne Argyros Stage, and also be part of the be part of the 13th Annual Pacific Playwrights Festival.

As previously announced, The Segerstrom Theatre season begins with Nick DeGruccio’s production of Putting It Together, the revue of Stephen Sondheim music (September 11-October 11), to be followed by Noah Haidle’s Saturn Returns (October 23-November 22), which tells the story of a man at three stages of his life; A Christmas Carol starring Hal Landon Jr. as Scrooge (November 28-December 26); August Wilson’s award-winning drama Fences, about a former Negro League baseball player, directed by Seret Scott (January 22-February 21); and Beth Henley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy Crimes of the Heart, about a trio of eccentric Southern sisters (May 7-June 6).

The Julianne Argyros Stage season will kick off with the world premiere of Julie Marie Myatt’s The Happy Ones, directed by Martin Benson, about a suburban man and a Vietnamese refugee in the 1970s (September 27-October 18), to be followed by Adam Gwon’s musical Ordinary Days, about four New Yorkers (January 3-24); and the world premiere of Howard Korder’s In a Garden, about an American architect who plays a game of cat and mouse with a Middle Eastern Culture Minister (March 7-28).

In addition, the Argyros Stage will house three family musicals: Joan Cushing’s Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business (November 6-22); John Glore’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel A Wrinkle in Time (February 5-21), and the world premiere of Bathsheba Doran’s Ben and the Magic Paintbrush (May 21-June 6).

The theater will also host its annual Pacific Playwrights Festival (April 23-25), which will include two full productions of world premiere plays to run March, April, and May.
