REDCAT is set to present its ninth annual New Original Works festival, July 26-August 11.

The festival will feature nine new original works and works-in-progress by local dance, theater, music and multimedia artists, presented in three distinct programs over three consecutive weekends. Week one will include Poor Dog Group: The Murder Ballad, a movement-based work giving physical life to Jelly Roll Morton’s legendary 1938 recording; Opera Povera: To Valerie Solanas and Marilyn Monroe in Recognition of Their Desperation, in which Sean Griffin and vocalist Juliana Snapper pay tribute to renowned composer Pauline Oliveros with an operatic staging of her score from 1970; and director and puppeteer Susan Simpson’s blend of historical fact with speculative fiction in Exhibit A.

The second week will feature the ongoing investigative dance project Nick+Jame: Lake; sound and video artist Jinku Kim; and Prumsodun OK: Of Land and Sky, a multimedia performance drawing on Cambodian pop music and traditional dance to retell and recast a classical drama.

In the final week of the festival, REDCAT will present Emily Mast’s B!rdbra!n, in which seven distinct performers interpret and gesture in a series of vignettes that expose the problematic nature of communications; Melanie Rios Glaser’s La Tribu, featuring dancers Karinne Keithley Syers, Jmy James Kidd, Rebecca Bruno, and Luke Hegel-Cantarella in improvisational dance that stems from Glaser’s site-specific dances in Guatemala City following the country’s 30-year civil war; and Obie Award-winning theater artist Heather Woodbury in the first glimpse at a live solo distillation of her epic, web-cast soap opera As the Globe Warms.
