The Geffen Playhouse will honor entertainment-industry professionals Mellody Hobson, George Lucas, Sir Elton John, and David Furnish at its annual Backstage at the Geffen celebration on March 22.

Hobson, the president of Ariel Investments and board chair of DreamWorks Animation SKG, and Lucas, the filmmaker behind Star Wars, will receive the Distinction in Service Award. John, the legendary singer-songwriter, and filmmaker Furnish will receive the Distinction in Theater Award.

"Next year’s honorees are two powerful couples…dynamic trailblazers whose accomplishments in the arenas of entertainment and business are no less impressive than their many philanthropic contributions," said board cochairs Martha Henderson and Pamela Robinson.

Funds raised are earmarked for a host of Geffen Playhouse endeavors including new play development, playwright commissions, second productions, and artistic risks, as well as the theater’s award-winning education and outreach programs which help bring the excitement of live theater to more than 15,000 disadvantaged youth, seniors, veterans, and community members annually. Last year’s event raised over $1.4 million for these programs.
