The Fountain Theatre has announced Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart as its next production, set to run from September 18-November 3, in advance of a September 21 opening.

Simon Levy directs this revival production, bringing Kramer’s groundbreaking drama about the onset of the AIDS crisis to Los Angeles for the first time in over 16 years. The Normal Heart premiered at New York’s Public Theater in 1985 to widespread critical acclaim, and its 2011 Broadway revival earned Tony, Drama League, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards for Best Revival of a Play. An HBO film adaptation, directed by Ryan Murphy (Glee) and starring Mark Ruffalo, Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer and Julia Roberts, is also slated for a 2014 premiere.

The Fountain Theatre production stars Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award-winning actor Tim Cummings (The New Electric Ballroom) as writer and activist Ned Weeks. Cummings is joined by Verton R. Banks (Butterflies of Uganda); Bill Brochtrup (NYPD Blue); Matt Gottlieb (The Grapes of Wrath); Fred Koehler ( Kate & Allie); Stephen O’Mahoney (Harvey); Ray Paolantonio (Wilhelm Reich in Hell); Dan Shaked (On the Spectrum); and Jeff Witzke (Book of Liz).

The creative team features set design by Jeff McLaughlin, lighting design by R. Christopher Stokes, sound design by Peter Bayne, video design by Adam Flemming, costume design by Naila Aladdin Sanders, and prop design is by Misty Carlisle.
