The Hollywood Bowl has announced preliminary principal casting for Hairspray, to run August 5-7. As previously announced, Jerry Mitchell will direct and choreograph the production, which will have musical direction by Lon Hoyt.

Based on the classic film by John Waters, Hairspray features music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Set in 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program. When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight and launches a campaign to integrate the show.

The company will feature Harvey Fierstein and Marissa Jaret Winokur, reprising their Tony Award winning performances, respectively, as mother and daughter Edna and Tracy Turnblad, along with Corbin Bleu (Seaweed), Drew Carey (Wilbur Turnblad), Diana DeGarmo (Penny Pingleton), Mo Gaffney (Prudy Pingleton/The Gym Teacher/The Matron), Nick Jonas (Link Larkin), Darlene Love (Motormouth Maybelle), Tara Macri (Amber), and John Stamos (Corny Collins). Additional casting will be announced shortly.
