Brian Cox has joined the cast in Showtime’s upcoming new series The Big C, while Joanne Whalley has been cast as the female lead in Showtime’s The Borgias, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

As previously reported, The Big C will star 2010 Tony nominee Laura Linney as a woman who has been diagnosed with cancer, and will also feature Tony nominee Oliver Platt and Oscar nominee Gabourey Sidibe. It is scheduled to premiere on August 16. Cox, who will play the father of Linney’s character, has starred on Broadway in such shows as Art and Rock ‘N’ Roll.

The Borgias, as previously reported, will star Tony Award winner Jeremy Irons and Tony and Olivier Award winner Derek Jacobi. The show is set in Italy in 1492, and follows a powerful crime family. It is scheduled to debut next year. Whalley will be appearing later this month in the LATW production of She Stoops to Conquer and received a Theatre World Award for a 1989 revival of What the Butler Saw.
