Four-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper, who recently ended his Broadway run in The Elephant Man, is now in negotiations with Warner Bros. to direct the third remake of the romantic drama A Star Is Born, according to Variety. The film would mark Cooper's directorial debut.

Based on William Wellman's 1937 film, starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March, the story follows an aspiring Hollywood actress and the aging movie star who helps launch her career. The film was remade in 1954, starring Judy Garland and James Mason, and again in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson.

Cooper will produce the project through his WB-based company 22 Green, along with Jon Peters, Billy Gerber, and Basil Iwanyk. Clint Eastwood, who directed Cooper in his recent Oscar-nominated role in American Sniper, had been announced as the remake's director in 2011, with Beyonce Knowles in the starring role. Both later declined the project because of other obligations.

Cooper is expected to cast himself as the male lead, though Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christian Bale have all been mentioned for the role as well. Will Fetters penned the latest script, which Cooper will help revise.
