Full cast and creative team information has been announced for The Antaeus Company’s world premiere of American Tales, a new musical at the Deaf West Theatre, June 19-August 17. With music by Jan Powell, and book and lyrics by Ken Stone, this production will be directed by Thor Steingraber.

American Tales takes a musical journey with Mark Twain and Herman Melville in adaptations of their stories. The Loves of Alonzo Fitz Clarence and Rosannah Ethelton is a free adaptation of Twain’s comic look at the telephone, a new invention at the time. Bartleby the Scrivener, one of Melville’s stories, follows Bartleby, a cog in the machine of an 1840’s law office who refuses to work one day, responding to every request with, “I would prefer not to.” The production is the main event of the Antaeus Company’s Classicsfest 2008, and it will also be part of the ASCAP Festival of New American Musicals.

The cast will feature John Apicella, Emily Bergl, Daniel Blinkoff, Josh Clark, JD Cullum, Richard Miro, Philip Proctor, Devon Sorvari, Peter Van Norden, and Jeremy Shouldis. The creative team will include Laura Fine Hawkes (set design), Jose Lopez (lighting design), and Jeffrey Schoenberg (costume design).
