Brian Conley, Phill Jupitus, Les Dennis Join Michael Ball on U.K. Hairspray Tour

Brian Conley and Phill Jupitus will join Olivier Award winner Michael Ball in the hit musical Hairspray on the show’s upcoming UK tour. The three performers will alternate playing Edna Turnblad, a role which they all have played in the West End. Along with news of the multiple casting of this role, it has been announced that Les Dennis will co-star as Edna’s husband Wilbur Turnblad at selected venues. No other casting has been announced.

The tour opens at the Cardiff Millennium Centre, where it runs from March 30 to April 24, before continuing through before continuing through to January 9, 2011 to Glasgow, Southampton, Wolverhampton, Leeds, Manchester, Plymouth, Liverpool, Sunderland, Milton Keynes, Oxford, Birmingham, Bradford and Edinburgh, with further dates to be announced.

Hairspray, which is currently running at the West End’s Shaftesbury Theatre, is written by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Thomas Meehan, and Mark O’Donnell, based on the film by John Waters, and is directed by Jack O’Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. It features set design by David Rockwell, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Kenneth Posner, and sound design by Steve C. Kennedy.
