Alley Theatre Architect Ulrich Franzen Has Died

Ulrich Franzen, who designed the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas, died on October 6 in Santa Fe, New Mexico at age 91, according to The New York Times.

In 1964, the German-born architect, who had graduated from the Harvard School of Design, was unanimously selected by the Alley’s board of directors to create a home for the theater company. The theater officially opened in 1968.

Franzen also helped design the Roosevelt Field shopping mall on Long Island, the world headquarters for the Philip Morris Companies in Manhattan, two towers for Hunter College in Manhattan, and the Harlem School for the Arts.

He is survived by his wife Josephine; two sons, Peter and David; a daughter, April; and three grandchildren.
