Greta Oglesby to Perform Title Role in Caroline, or Change at Syracuse Stage

Greta Oglesby will star in the title role of Caroline, or Change, to be performed in the Archbold Theatre at Syracuse Stage, February 1-26. Marcela Lorca will direct and choreograph the production, with musical direction by Christopher Drobny.

Playwright Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori’s unconventional, through-composed musical was the recipient of six Tony nominations and the Olivier Award for Best Musical.

The year is 1963 and in the Gellman household in Lake Charles, Louisiana, eight-year-old Noah struggles with the loss of his mother, while Caroline, the family’s African American maid, struggles as a single mom of four children. Through Caroline and Noah’s friendship, Kushner and Tesori explore thoughts on economic hardship and racial inequity that are relevant today as they were in the early 60s.

The cast will also include Michelle Barber (Grandma Gellman), Larry Block (Mr. Stopnick), Doug Eskew (The Dryer and The Bus), Piper Goodeve (Rose Gellman), Caitlainne Rose Gurreri (Radio 1), Emily Jenda (The Moon), Gabrielle Porter (Radio 3), Christina Acosta Robinson (Radio 2), Danielle K. Thomas (The Washing Machine), James Van Treuren (Grandpa Gellman), Stephanie Umoh (Emmie), Price Waldman (as Stuart Gellman), and Regina Marie Williams (Dotty).

Also featured in the Syracuse Stage cast is local actor Séamus Gailor, as Noah Gellman, in addition to these other young actors involved in the show: Malachi Emmanuel (as Joe), Levonn L. Owens (as Jackie), Christof Deboni (Understudy Noah), and Elijah M. Theus (Understudy Jackie/Joe).

Oglesby is reprising her role from the recent Guthrie Theater production, which was also directed by Lorca.
