Two-time Tony Award nominee and 2012 Drama Desk Special Award recipient Mary Testa (Queen of the Mist) is set to star in Geraldine Aron’s one-woman comedy My Brilliant Divorce at Sarasota, Florida’s Asolo Repertory Theatre, opening later this month.

Asolo Rep‘s Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards will direct Testa as she embodies a 40-something-year-old housewife named Angela whose cheating husband has left her alone in the midst of a mid-life crisis. Two preview performances will be held on June 23 at 2pm and June 25 at 7:30pm, with an official opening scheduled for 8pm on June 26. The production is set to run through July 14 at Asolo Rep’s Mertz Theatre located in the FSU Center for the Performing Arts.

My Brilliant Divorce has received international recognition since its premiere at the Druid Theatre in Galway, Ireland in 2001, having been produced (or awaiting production) in 33 countries. In 2004 the play was transferred to London’s West End where it was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment, and it received its American debut in 2012 at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, New York.

“Mary Testa is such a wonderfully gifted actress. I could think of no one better to play the part of Angela,” said Edwards. “We’ve all experienced heartbreak at some point in our lives, so we naturally embrace those rare artists who can inform our own existence and at the same time make us laugh until our sides ache.”
