Goodspeed Musicals of East Haddam, Connecticut, has announced that a new musical, The Circus in Winter, will join its 30th-anniversary season with a production in fall 2014. Inspired by the acclaimed novel of the same name by Cathy Day, the musical features a folk/rock score by Ben Clark and a book by Beth Turcotte and Tony nominee Hunter Foster, who is currently performing on Broadway in the musical adaptation of The Bridges of Madison County.

The Circus in Winter is described as a story "where legend and lore collide under the big top filled with disheveled hustlers, death-defying acrobats and a dreamer named Wallace Porter searching for redemption and grace." The piece was originally developed at Ball State University in 2010 and was presented at the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's Festival of New Musicals in 2012. The production starred Hunter's sister, two-time Tony winner Sutton Foster (Anything Goes).
