Jubilant Sykes to Star in Hartford Stage’s Breath and Imagination

Acclaimed gospel singer Jubilant Sykes will star in Hartford Stage‘s upcoming production of Daniel Beaty’s new play Breath and Imagination: The Story of Roland Hayes, according to the Hartford Courant. Darko Tresnjak directs the work, which features gospel and classical music and runs January 10-February 3.

Sykes’ sang the role of the Celebrant in the Grammy-nominated recording of Leonard Bernstein’s Mass. He has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and the Deutsche Oper Berlin, among many other venues.

Beatty’s play tells the story of world-renowned African-American classical vocalist Roland Hayes, the son of a slave, who journeyed from a boy in church singing spirituals to performing before kings and queens.
