New Chicago-based company The Collective Theatre will present the Chicago premiere of Katori Hall’s HooDoo Love, running September 22-October 21 at the Anthenaeum Theatre. Nelsan Ellis, who plays Lafayette Reynolds on HBO’s True Blood, directs the production.

Christophé Abiel, Toni Lynice Fountain, Mark Smith, and Lynn Wactor star in the 1930s-set work, which finds a woman trying to realize her dreams as she escapes from the Mississippi cotton fields to become a blues singer in Memphis.

Playwright Hall won London’s Olivier Award for her play, The Mountantop, which was seen earlier in 2012 on Broadway. Her works also include Hurt Village, Remembrance, and WHADDABLOODCLOT!!!!, among others.
