Roger Mueller will star in the title role of Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s world premiere of the new family musical, The Emperor’s New Clothes, to be presented in the Courtyard Theater, June 30-August 29. Rachel Rockwell will direct.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic story of the same name, the CST-commissioned work is by Alan Schmuckler (music and lyrics) and David Holstein (book), and takes a tuneful contemporary spin on the classic tale. This new adaptation adds a bright, sassy daughter for the monarch and populates his kingdom with a gaggle of comedic courtiers and sullen citizens.

The cast will also include Megan Long as the Emperor’s daughter, Sam; Anne Gunn as Mama Swindler; Alex Goodrich as Mama Swindler’s son Kimberly; and Jonathan Weir, as Lord Vince. The ensemble will feature Mark David Kaplan, George Andrew Wolff, and Jarrod Zimmerman.

The design team will include scenic designer Kevin Depinet; lighting designer Jesse Klug; costume designer Debbie Baer; sound designer James Savage; and wig and make-up designer Melissa Veal.
