Flashback Friday: Spring Awakening's Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff Before They Were Stars

The Deaf West Theatre Company revival opens this Sunday at the Brooks-Atkinson Theatre.

Spring Awakening returns to Broadway this Sunday at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre where the Deaf West Theatre Company's revival production will celebrate its official opening night. It's only been about seven years since Broadway last saw the Tony-winning coming-of-age rock musical, but much has changed since the show's New York debut.

Lea Michele (Wendla) became a household name with her breakout role on Glee, Skylar Astin (Georg) moved onto Pitch Perfect stardom, and Jonathan Groff (Melchior) graduated to the mature role of King George in the hit musical Hamilton. Krysta Rodriguez even moved up the ranks from an ensemble member in the original production to the role of Ilse in the revival.

The cast's 2007 Tony Awards performance is one big who's-who of Broadway and Hollywood, so we thought we'd spend this Friday flashing back to before they were stars. Plus, we can't help but admire the cleverly censored lyrics the musical managed to pull together for its nationally broadcast performance.
