Last night, Kerry Washington announced on The Tonight Show that American Son, a new play by Christopher Demos-Brown now running at Broadway's Booth Theatre, will be adapted and filmed for Netflix. The screen adaptation will feature the original Broadway cast and its director, Kenny Leon.

In addition to directing, Leon will return to produce, alongside Jeffrey Richards and Rebecca Gold. Washington and her EVP Development and Production Pilar Savone will also produce under Washington's banner Simpson Street. Production begins in New York City this February.

American Son opened November 4, 2018, at the Booth Theatre following a world-premiere production at Barrington Stage Company in 2016. The Broadway cast features Kerry Washington, Steven Pasquale, Jeremy Jordan, and Eugene Lee.

The play is described as follows: "A Florida police station in the middle of the night…a mother searching for her missing teenage son…American Son is a gripping tale of two parents caught in our national divide, with their worst fears hanging in the balance."

American Son will conclude its Broadway run on January 27.
