1776 Sets a Broadway Revival for 2021

Roundabout Theatre Company, in association with the American Repertory Theater at Harvard University, has announced plans for a Broadway revival of the 1969 Tony-winning musical 1776. Broadway performances are set to begin spring 2021 at the American Airlines Theatre, following a mounting at the A.R.T. in spring 2020.

Directed by A.R.T. artistic director and Tony Award winner Diane Paulus, the coproduction will also be presented in a handful of cities between the A.R.T. and Roundabout engagements, including at Center Theatre Group's Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in July of 2020. Additional dates and cities, as well as cast and creative team, will be announced at a later date.

Featuring a book by Peter Stone, and a score by Sherman Edwards, 1776 is described as follows: "They knew they would make history, but not what history would make of them. Fed up with living under the tyranny of British rule, John Adams attempts to persuade his fellow members of the Continental Congress to vote in favor of American Independence and sign the Declaration. But how much is he willing to compromise in the pursuit of freedom? And who does that freedom belong to? Tony Award winner Diane Paulus directs a new production of this Tony Award-winning musical, reexamining this pivotal moment in American history."

1776 was last seen at Roundabout in a Tony-nominated 1997 revival directed by Scott Ellis.
