Huntington Announces Cast for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Yvette Freeman will star as the legendary blues singer Ma Rainey in The Huntington Theatre Company production of August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, to play the BU Theatre, March 9-April 8, 2012. Liesl Tommy will direct.

In the play, a quartet of blues musicians gather in a run-down 1920s Chicago studio waiting for legendary blues singer Ma Rainey to arrive to record new sides of her old favorites.

The cast will also feature Joniece Abbot-Pratt (Dussie Mae), Corey Allen (Sylvester), Jason Bowen (Levee), Thomas Derrah (Sturdyvant), Will LeBow (Irvin), Timothy J. Smith (Policeman), G. Valmont Thomas (Cutler), Glenn Turner (Slow Drag) and Charles Weldon (Toledo).

The production will feature scenic and costume design by Clint Ramos, lighting design by Marcus Doshi and sound design and music direction by Broken Chord Collective.
