Lyric Stage Company's production of City of Angels begins tonight. Set in Hollywood in the 1940s, a young, disillusioned novelist named Stine works on a screenplay. With a tyrannical movie producer on his case and his marriage falling apart, Stine escapes through his film alter ego, detective Stone. Stone, however, has his own problems, namely being unable to get past the memory of the girl that got away. The musical spoofs both the glamour of old Hollywood and its on-screen counterpart, the film noir world of thugs and femmes fatales.

Directed by Spiro Veloudos with Catherine Stornetta as the music director and Rachel Bertone as the choreographer, the musical features a book by Larry Gelbart, music by Cy Coleman, and lyrics by David Zippel. The cast includes Ed Hoopman as Stone, Phil Tayler as Stine, Samantha Richert as Alaura Kingsley and Carla Haywood, J.T. Turner as Buddy Fidler and Irwin S. Irving, Leigh Barrett as Oolie and Donna, Damon Singletary as Big Six, the studio guard, and Dr. Mandril, Margarita Martinez as Sonny and the studio guard, Davron Monroe as Jimmy Powers, Jennifer Ellis as Bobby and Gabby, Tony Castellanos as Lieutenant Muñoz and Pancho Vargas, Meghan LaFlam as Mallory Kingsley and Avril Raines, and Patrick Varner as Peter Kingsley and Mahoney.

The creative team includes John Malinowski (light design), Matt Whiton (set design), Elisabetta Polito (costume design), David Wilson (sound design), and Johnathan Carr (projection design).

Performances will run through May 2.
