ArtsEmerson: The World on Stage has announced casting for Doug Elkins’ Fraulein Maria, to run September 23 – October 3 at the Paramount Theatre. Elkins, who has conceived the piece, will stage, choreograph and appear in the production.

The show is a reimagining of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music, in which the von Trapp children are hoodied hip-hop dancers and where cross-dressing nuns cavort across the stage. The piece is performed to the soundtrack of the movie version of the musical.

The company will also feature Hilary Brown, Gui Greene, Jeffrey Kazin, Deborah Lohse, Kellie Ann Lynch, Nicole Marquis, Meghan Merrill, Donnell Oakley, Joshua Palmer, Michael Preston, Krista Racho-Jansen, and Nicole Marie Smith. David Parker will appear as Liesel for the first week of the run, and Johnny Sorenson-Jolink will perform the role for the remainder of the run.

Two-time Bessie award-winner Elkins founded the Doug Elkins Dance Company, which performed nationally and internationally for 15 years. He has created original work for Israel’s Batsheva Dance Company, Flying Karamazov Brothers, MaggioDanza, Pennsylvania Ballet, Union Dance and CanDoCo of London, and the Mini & Maxi of Holland, among others.
