About This Show

The Looking Glass Theatre presents Jack!, a children’s play by Hana Roth Seavey. Kate Marks directs.

This rock-bluegrass musical is based on the Appalacian version of the medieval fairy-tale, “Jack and the Beanstalk.” Jack! is the story of the quintessential American hero. He’s sassy and snappy, and his Mother, a single parent, hardly knows what to make of this irrepressible and impractical teenager. Jack’s father was killed by a giant who robbed his mother of her dowry: the Hen that lays golden eggs, two sacks of gold, and her incredible singing Harp. To get them back and stop the Giant, Jack has to believe in an Old Man’s magic, to convince his Mother that he can do it, and to confront danger with amazing resourcefulness. Music, dance, rap/hip-hop, magic, masks, puppetry, and comedy make Jack! a turn-about in tradition: an old story in a new, hugely entertaining 21st century edition.

Appropriate for children 4-14.

There is a 10-minute intermission.
