Praised for its enchanting interpretations of comical theater, the Mansaku-no-Kai Kyogen Company, led by Mansaku Nomura, is a luminary of the ancient Japanese tradition of kyogen. One of four classical Japanese theatrical forms, kyogen praises human nature and offers a comic counterpoint to the more serious noh theater.
Traditional Kyogen Works

Using stylized movement, the company showcases some of the art form's most influential works, including Boshibari ("Tied to a Stick"), Kawakami ("Headwater"), and Kusabira ("Mushrooms").
The Kyogen of Errors
Wednesday, February 13th
Thursday, February 14th
Mansai Nomura, Mansaku's son and the artistic director of the Setagaya Public Theatre, transforms Shakespeare's classic tale The Comedy of Errors--about two pairs of twins separated at birth--into a witty production. His kyogen masters change masks at incredible speed, capturing the Bard's hilarious story of mistaken identity. This high-energy, laugh-out-loud production unites the universal appeal of Shakespeare with one of Japan's timeless traditions.
