WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

In association with Goodspeed Musicals, Ford's presents the world premiere of Meet John Doe, a musical adaptation of the 1941 Frank Capra classic set in depression-era America. A newspaper columnist, laid off after a corporate takeover, concocts a fictitious person called "John Doe" who is disgusted with the establishment, greed, and widespread poverty. As the public rallies behind the character, management, and the re-hired journalist (unconcerned with questions of ethics or journalism scandals of today) decide to find a real person to masquerade as John Doe. The imposter goes along with the deal, but finally musters the courage to stand up for his beliefs, an action that illustrates the potential for heroism and power in the common man. Eric Schaeffer, co-founder and artistic director of Signature Theatre, who recently directed the hit musical Nevermore as well as the popular Sondheim Celebration at The Kennedy Center will head the production at Ford's.

While the production is less than perfectly cast, the show's potential is clear.

Since it played at the Goodspeed Opera House in Connecticut last fall, in a developmental production with a largely different cast, Gerle and Sugarman have added four new[...]
