Annette Bening to Receive Will Award from Shakespeare Theatre Company

The Washington D.C.-based Shakespeare Theatre Company has selected stage and screen star Annette Bening as the 2010 recipient of The William Shakespeare Award for Classical Theatre, also known as the Will Award. She will be honored at the Harman Center for the Arts Annual Gala hosted by STC at Sidney Harman Hall on Sunday, October 3.

The Will Award is an annual honor presented by the company to recognize an artist who has made a significant contribution to classical theater in America. Past recipients include Sir Ian McKellen, Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Dame Judi Dench, Fiona Shaw, Ralph Fiennes, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Dame Maggie Smith, Hal Holbrook, Patrick Stewart, Sam Waterston, Lynn Redgrave, Christopher Walken, Morgan Freeman, Mel Gibson, Kenneth Branagh, Christopher Plummer, Kevin Kline, Joseph Papp and STC’s artistic director, Michael Kahn.

Bening’s stage credits include the Broadway production of Coastal Disturbances, for which she received a Tony nomination, as well as Medea, Hedda Gabler, and The Female of the Species. She is a three time Academy Award nominee, and perhaps best known for her performance in American Beauty. She can currently be seen in the film The Kids Are All Right.
