The award-winning Side by Side by Sondheim features timeless Sondheim songs (covering 1957 - 1976) from some of Broadway's most memorable musicals including West Side Story, Anyone Can Whistle, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened..., A Little Night Music, Company, and Pacific Overtures. With a nationwide reputation for mounting musicals both old and new - and especially the works of Mr. Sondheim - this marks the first time that Side by Side by Sondheim will be produced by Signature Theatre.

This is a totally delightful overview of Mr. Sondheims work up untill he wrote "Sweeney Todd" and it is wonderfully well performed by three engaging actors and two talented musicians. A wonderfully tuneful and engaging evening.

It's a challenge, at first, not to think of Signature Theatre's production of the revue
Side by Side by Sondheim as a mere musical appetizer, with the main course being the Kennedy Center's ambitious, grand-scale version of Sondheim's Follies. As it turns out, though, there is plenty here for Sondheim aficionados to chew on in this often engaging look at the master's work from the first 20 years of his career.
Indeed, director Matthew Gardiner has put together a fine cast of three -- Nancy Anderson, Sherri L. Edelen, and Matthew Scott -- and choreographed a substantial amount of movement for the performers, helping to fill the Max Theatre with energy.
