WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

Rod Serling's 1956 Peabody Award-winning masterpiece, Requiem for a Heavyweight is a heartwrenching story about a washed-up boxer and the men who control him as seen from the perspective of the underbelly of the gritty world of 1950s professional boxing in New York City. Originally written as a stage play, Requiem was first seen as a teleplay on Playhouse 90 in 1956 starring Jack Palance as 'Mountain,' and later made into a film starring Jackie Gleason and Anthony Quinn. It wasn't produced on stage until 1984 when it premiered at The Long Wharf Theatre starring Richard Dreyfuss and John Lithgow, and then going onto Broadway in 1985 with George Segal taking over the 'Maish' role and Lithgow remaining on as 'Mountain.' Requiem for a Heavyweight won the prestigious 1956 George Foster Peabody Award and a 1957 Emmy Award for Serling for Best Screenplay - both for the Playhouse 90 production.
