WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
In November 2002, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks sat down and committed to writing a play a day for the next 365 days. The world premiere of this play cycle is presented as a yearlong national festival, performed simultaneously in 14 major cities and communities around the country by over 600 theatres in the largest theatre collaboration in U.S. History. 365 Days / 365 Plays is presented in Washington D.C., Atlanta, Austin, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York City, San Francisco and Seattle, along with the Carolinas, Mississippi River towns, and university campuses.
Throughout the year, each participating organization is assigned one week of seven plays which range in length from 1-5 pages. These pieces may be presented however those companies wish, allowing them to bring their own aesthetic and mission to the work, and may be produced in a variety of ways, from a full production, a staged reading, or even as a pre-show lobby event before a regularly scheduled production, thereby creating a unified but incredibly diverse play cycle. One of the seven plays may be done every day for a week, or they can all be combined into one single event.
A festival kick-off event is scheduled for 3:30 PM on Saturday, November 18, 2006 at The Studio Theatre. A closing celebration is planned for November 2007, to be held at the Signature Theatre.
