Stephen Sondheim, Barbra Streisand, and More Accept the Presidential Medal of Freedom

President Obama presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the 17 2015 recipients at a November 24 White House Ceremony, and video of the event in full has been posted on the White House's YouTube Channel. Below, you can check out the footage, which includes theater luminaries such as Stephen Sondheim and Barbra Streisand accepting their awards.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom recognizes outstanding contributions to the betterment of the United States, including the realm of cultural endeavors. Along with Broadway's Stephen Sondheim and Barbra Streisand, the honor was presented to other cultural icons, including Gloria and Emilio Estefan, whose legacies are captured in Broadway's currently running musical On Your Feet!

Additional recipients included Yogi Berra (posthumously), Bonnie Carroll, Shirley Chisholm (posthumously), Billy Frank Jr. (posthumously), Lee Hamilton, Katherine G. Johnson, Willie Mays, Barbara Mikulski, Itzhak Perlman, William Ruckelshaus, Steven Spielberg, James Taylor, and Minoru Yasui (posthumously).

Sondheim, who was tapped for the award last year but was unable to attend the 2014 ceremony, officially received his medal yesterday with the 2015 recipients.
