The Producers begins performances tonight at Olney Theatre Center. Based on the hit 1968 film by Mel Brooks, the show follows Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom. Max is a washed-up Broadway producer, and Leo is his trusty accountant. In an effort to get rich quick, they decide to make the most notorious flop in show-biz history.

Written by Mel Brooks and directed by Mark Waldrop, the cast is led by Michael Kostroff and Jason Graae as Max Bialystock and Roger de Bris, respectively. They are joined by Michael Di Liberto as Leo Bloom, Stephen F. Schmidt as Franz, and Robert Mintz as Carmen Ghia.

"Some days, I feel like Max Bialystock," said Olney Theatre Center artistic director Jason Loewith. "Except I have the heart of an accountant, so I’m more like Leo Bloom. And I know The Producers will be a smash hit!"

The creative team includes James Fouchard (set design), Seth Gilbert (costume design), Andrew Griffin (lighting design), Max Krembs (sound design), Darius Smith (music director), and Tara Jeanne Vallee (choreographer).

Performances will run through July 26.
