Broadway veteran Jeff McCarthy has joined the cast of Arena Stage’s production of Amy Freed’s You, Nero. He replaces the previously reported Marc Vietor in the role of Scribonius.

In order to incorporate McCarthy into the company, Arena Stage has canceled four preview performances including November 29 at 7:30pm, 30 at 7:30pm, December 1 at 8pm, and 3 at 2pm. You, Nero will resume its original schedule Saturday, December 3 at 8pm, and will open as previously announced on December 8.

In the play, as Rome collapses beneath Nero’s outrageous narcissism, a forgotten playwright tries to restore order through the art of theater.

Nicholas Martin directs the production, which stars Danny Scheie as Nero, along with Susannah Schulman as Poppaea, Kasey Mahaffy as Fabiolo, Nancy Robinette as Agrippina, Laurence O’Dwyer as Burrus, and John C. Vennema as Seneca.

McCarthy’s many Broadway credits include Chicago, The Pirate Queen, Urinetown, Side Show, and Beauty and the Beast.
