Actor Dustin Hoffman and ballerina Natalia Makarova — both of whom have Broadway credits — are among the recipients of the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors, and will be celebrated at a ceremony held on Sunday, December 2. That gala event will be taped for broadcast on CBS, to air December 26. Emmy winners George Stevens, Jr. and Michael Stevens will produce the show.

Hoffman’s Broadway credits include Death of a Salesman, The Merchant of Venice, All Over Town, Jimmy Shine and The Subject Was Roses. Makarova won Tony, Drama Desk, and Theatre World Awards for her performance in On Your Toes.

Additional recipients include bluesman Buddy Guy, comedian/television host David Letterman, and rock band Led Zeppelin — with keyboardist/bassist John Paul Jones, guitarist Jimmy Page, and singer Robert Plant each receiving the Kennedy Center Honors.

The Honors recipients are recognized for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts — whether in music, dance, theater, opera, motion pictures, or television. The primary criterion in the selection process is excellence, and the Honors are not designated by art form or category of artistic achievement.

The Kennedy Center Honors medallions will be presented on Saturday, December 1, the night before the gala, at a State Department dinner hosted by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
