American Opera Theater to Present David et Jonathas Premiere

The American Opera Theater (AOT) will present the American premiere of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s David et Jonathas in the Gonda Theater at the Davis Performing Arts Center in Washington DC, May 2-4, and at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Opera House in New York, May 9-10.

Written by Charpentier in 1688 for the Jesuit College Louis-Le-Grand in Paris, France, David et Jonathas is a Baroque five-act sacred opera that recounts the love between David, the future king of the nation of Israel, and Jonathan, the eldest son of Saul, King of Israel, and their struggle to reconcile their affection for each other.

The cast will include Brian Cummings (counter-tenor), Rebecca Duren (soprano), Jason Buckwalter (baritone), Craig Lemming (tenor), Ferris Allen (baritone), Kristen Dubenion-Smith (mezzo-soprano), Matthew Heil (tenor), Emily Noel (soprano), Colin Levin (baritone), AOT’s resident period orchestra Ignoti Dei, and the Virginia Tech Chamber Singers.
