Virginia’s Signature Theatre Announces 2008-2009 Season

The Signature Theatre in Arlington, Virginia has announced its 2008-2009 season.

The season begins with Robert Taylor and Richard Oberacker’s musical Ace, August 26-September 28, which replaces the previously announced March run at Washington D.C.’s National Theatre. Eric Schaeffer, Signature’s artistic director, will helm the production, which is aiming to open on Broadway in Spring 2009. No casting has yet been announced.

The season will also include Jeremy Skidmore’s production of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore (September 23-November 9) and Michael Baron’s production of Douglas Carter Beane’s The Little Dog Laughed, starring Holly Twyford (January 13-March 1).

Up next will be two works from composer-lyricist Michael John LaChiusa: Matthew Gardiner’s production of See What I Wanna See, based on the short stories of Ryunosuke Akutagawa (April 7-May 24), and the world premiere of the musical Giant, based on the novel by Edna Ferber, with a book by Sybille Pearson and directed by Schaefer (April 28-May 31).

In addition, Signature will present a one-night concert of the Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents musical Anyone Can Whistle (October 6), and four cabaret programs: The Lost Songs of Broadway 1940-1950 (September 3-6); December Divas II (December 17-20); LaChiusa’s Ladies (March 18-21); and Partial Eclipse, a new song cycle by Matt Conner (June 10-13).
