Mitchell received a Tony Award for his role as Fred Graham in Kiss Me Kate, and was Tony-nominated for his performances in Man of La Mancha, Ragtime, and King Hedley II. He also performed the title role in Sweeney Todd at the Kennedy Center's tremendously successful Sondheim Celebration in 2002.
