Tony Award winner Idina Menzel will return to Broadway in the upcoming musical If/Then, set to hit an as yet unnamed Nederlander stage in Spring 2014. The new show will begin its trek to New York via a world premiere tryout as part of Washington D.C.'s National Theatre's Fall 2013 season. The tuner reunites Pulitzer Prize-winning Next to Normal creatives Tom Kitt, Brian Yorkey, and Michael Greif.
The production brings Menzel back to the stage after an eight-year break from Broadway, which began shortly after her iconic turn as Wicked 's original "Green Girl."
If/Then begins performances at The National on November 5, 2013, with opening set for November 24. Performances on Broadway are expected to begin March 4, 2014, with opening scheduled for March 27.
If/Then follows Elizabeth, a woman about to turn 40 who moves to New York City hoping to renew her career and have a fresh start on life. As often happens in the Big Apple, however, her best-laid plans don't play out as expected, and her life is changed in surprising and romantic ways.
In addition to originating Elphaba in Wicked, Menzel has appeared on Broadway in Rent, in a role she reprised for the movie adaptation. Off-Broadway credits include See What I Wanna See, The Wild Party, and Hair. Notable appearances on screen include Enchanted and Glee.
Composer Kitt received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Orchestrations, for Next to Normal. Additional Broadway credits include Bring it On, American Idiot and High Fidelity.
Yorkey received a Tony Award for his work as Next to Normal's librettist. His writing has also appeared in off-Broadway's Making Tracks, The Wedding Banquet, and Play it by Heart.
Greif, the three-time Tony Award nominee who directed Menzel in the original company of Rent, is a prolific New York director, having staged works including Giant, the recent Angels in America revival, The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures, and Grey Gardens.
David Stone, who produced Wicked and Next to Normal, is lead producer on the project. "Producing Next to Normal was one of the most gratifying experiences of my career, and I am deeply honored to have been working once again with Tom, Brian, and Michael on developing their next Broadway musical," he stated in a press release. "Tom and Brian have written an ambitious, challenging, and very moving musical with a tour-de-force role at its center. I am thrilled to have Idina Menzel, whom I consider one of the most exciting stage talents of our time, leading the company and returning to musical theater with this production."
On-sale dates, performance schedule, and ticket information will be announced shortly.
