Richard III is too sexy, Othello bears a strange resemblance to Yul Brenner, Macbeth is abandoned by a crew of "Tartan wearing weenies" - and that's only a small taste of Shakespeare's Skum's twisted homage to some of Will's greatest works, appearing at Arlington's own Comedy Spot.
Skum specializes in turning William Shakespeare's most familiar tragedies into one act comedies that appeal to Bard neophytes, first folio scholars and everyone in between. While the troupe most often performs for large outdoor crowds vaguely familiar with Shakespeare's works, devotees have also been seduced by Skum's ability to handle the challenging classical text. Skum has enjoyed rave reviews at events from the Folger Theatre to Baltimore's Center Stage, and is delighted to find themselves with a cult following of Skumophiles. Even if you've never heard of iambic pentameter, the Skum's energetic mix of language, satire and slapstick will have you rolling in the aisles.
In this most recent indoor theatrical foray, cast members Liz Demery, Carolyn Spedden, Stephon Walker and Steve Wannall present "Macbeth in 20 Minute or Less," "Richard III: Just Misunderstood" and "Othello: Having a Bad Day." Spedden plays quadruple duty in this production as creator, director, writer and performer.
