Virginia Stage Company has announced that it will be presenting the Virginia premiere of Matthew Lopez’s The Whipping Man as part of the company’s 2012-2013 season. Performances will be held at the Wells Theatre, February 26-March 17.

War-ruined Richmond, 1865, is the setting for this new drama about faith, family and the costs of freedom. Soldier Caleb, raised a devout Jew, returns home disillusioned and faithless. While he and his family’s former slaves work to rebuild their lives and restore their shared faith, secrets threaten their new-found freedom.

Also featured in VSC’s 2012-2013 season are August Wilson’s Fences, Deborah Brevoort’s The Comfort Team, Charles Leipart and Eric Schorr’s Frog Kiss and Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple.
