Welcome to the Circus: Pippin’s Patina Miller, Matthew James Thomas, and Andrea Martin on French, Fosse and Finding Your Place in the World

We speak with the cast and creative team about the revival of this musical theater classic.

In its first Broadway revival since premiering 40 years ago, Pippin tells the coming-of-age story of a young prince on a journey to find his “corner of the sky.” Actor Matthew James Thomas, who plays Pippin, sets the scene, while Patina Miller tells us how she’s putting her own twist on the role of “Leading Player” (which was originated by Tony Award-winning actor Ben Vereen). Tony Award-winning actress Andrea Martin talks circus, studying mime with Jacques Lecoq, and how Pippin is her “dream job.” Helmed by Tony Award nominated director Diane Paulus (Hair), the musical features a score by Tony nominated composer Stephen Schwartz, choreography by Chet Walker (in the style of Bob Fosse), and circus creation by Gypsy Snider. The creative team also includes Tony Award winners Scott Pask (Scenic Design), Kenneth Posner (Lighting Design), Clive Goodwin (Sound Design), and Dominique Lemieux (Costume Design). includes orchestrations by Tony Award winner Larry Hochman, with music supervision by Nadia Di Giallonardo and music direction by Charlie Alterman. Pippin hits the Music Box Theatre in “no time at all” (March 23).
