The Kitchen Concerts: PigPen Theatre Co.

We noticed a trend with many Broadway performers: In between their eight shows a week, they like to rock out at venues around New York with their bands. So we're bringing them closer to home.

What would happen if Mumford & Sons’ sons got the acting bug and started a hot downtown theater company? You’d get PigPenTheatre Co, the troupe of brotherly New York folk musicians known for tight string arrangements, seven-part harmonies, and hotward—you know, a little hot, a little awkward—patter.

While the jam sesh you are about to watch is all indie-band awesome, PigPen is, in fact, a theater company and a band, with their play The Old Man and the Old Moon having topped Best of 2012 lists across the city. The group, which has been together since their freshman year at Carnegie Mellon University School of Drama, are about to head out on a Northeast tour in support of their debut album, Bremen. Before they become household names, we brought them into our office kitchen to perform a track and eat some snacks.

If you live in New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, or Virginia and want to see the boys of PigPen jammin’ live in your city, click here for tour info and to purchase tickets.
