The Color Purple's Cynthia Erivo on the Inspirational Quality of Celie

Erivo is a 2016 Tony nominee for her performance in the acclaimed revival.

In late 2015, the British actress Cynthia Erivo took Broadway by storm with her performance as Celie in John Doyle's new revival of The Color Purple. Her work in the show is so moving to viewers that each night she receives a mid-show standing ovation following her eleven-o'clock number, "I'm Here." And here she is now, a 2016 Tony Award nominee, and the winner of this year's Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards. TheaterMania caught up with Erivo, who filled us in on the qualities of Celie that make every audience member relate to her struggle.
