Nikki M. James and the Cast of The Bubbly Black Girl "Skate" to City Center

You may not know this musical now, but here's why you should.

Kirsten Childs's 2000 autobiographical musical The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin returns to the stage at New York City Center on July 26 and 27 as part of the summer's Encores! Off-Center series. Tony winner Nikki M. James leads the cast as Viveca, a young woman from Los Angeles who navigates the politics of gender and race while pursuing her dreams of becoming a dancer. Take a look as James and the Bubbly Black Girl ensemble offer an early preview of the jaunty number "The Skate" while sharing a few tidbits about this lesser-known musical.
