Losing Our Minds: The Other Place’s Opening Night on Broadway

Critically acclaimed leading lady Laurie Metcalf, co-star Daniel Stern and more celebrate the Broadway debut of Sharr White’s family thriller.

Few subjects are as tender and frightening as dementia. Sharr White’s The Other Place follows a neuroscientist, Juliana (Laurie Metcalf), as she begins to lose control of the thoughts in her head. Her husband (Daniel Stern of Home Alone and Wonder-Years-voice fame) files for divorce, her daughter (Zoe Perry, Matcalf’s real-life daughter) runs off with an older man (John Schiappa), and she finds her mental health in a state of jeopardy. White, who still has a day job writing fashion copy, did not choose easy subject matter. Yet the mood was light and reflective on January 10, as Manhattan Theatre Club celebrated the Broadway debut of his drama, which had a successful off-Broadway run (starring Metacalf and Schiappa) at MCC’s Lucille Lortel Theatre.
