John Patrick Shanley Brings Together Jason Alexander and Sherie Rene Scott in His New Play

Shanley's The Portuguese Kid has its world premiere at Manhattan Theatre Club.

The Portuguese Kid, the latest play written and directed by the prolific John Patrick Shanley, was enticing to its leading man, Jason Alexander. When a playwright of Shanley's influence writes a role for you, as Alexander points out, you don't say no. But flattery aside, the Manhattan Theatre Club production at New York City Center allows Alexander to not only get back to his stage roots but to go head-to-head with comic greats like Mary Testa, who plays his mother, and Sherie Rene Scott, who plays his love interest. In anticipation of the show's world premiere, the company, which also includes Aimee Carrero and Pico Alexander, discussed a play that Shanley says will provide a laugh for anyone who needs it.
