Jennifer Holliday on Her Return to Broadway in The Color Purple

The Tony and Grammy winner takes on the role of Shug Avery.

In 1981, Jennifer Holliday made a major splash as the original Effie Melody White in Dreamgirls. It was a role that won Holliday legendary status, and both a Tony and Grammy to boot. Thirty-five years later (and 17 since her last appearance, as Mama Morton in Chicago) Holliday is returning to her old stomping grounds as the new Shug Avery in The Color Purple. It's a challenging part, and it's her chance to make an impression as a gutsy blues singer who can show people how to love one another and themselves, too.
