Jackie Hoffman and John "Lypsinka" Epperson Preview Once Upon a Mattress

Jack Cummings III directs the Transport Group's revival of the classic musical comedy.

For the first time since 1997, Once Upon a Mattress is back in New York City, receiving a brand-new revival via off-Broadway mainstay Transport Group. The production, directed by Jack Cummings III at Abrons Arts Center, features a pair of unusually cast stars: Broadway comedian extraordinaire Jackie Hoffman is playing Winnifred, and John Epperson, better known as his drag-tastic altar-ego "Lypsinka," takes on the role of the evil Queen. And yet as unconventional as it seems, in the world of Mary Rodgers' classic musical, anything goes. TheaterMania met up with the cast in their rehearsal room to discuss the return of this "adult musical comedy" and the superb clowns inheriting the timeless leading roles.
