Duncan Sheik and Lynn Nottage Bring Music to The Secret Life of Bees

The popular coming-of-age story is headed to Vassar for the 2017 Powerhouse Theater season.

In 2008, Sue Monk Kidd's novel The Secret Life of Bees was adapted for the big screen. Now, nearly a decade later, the story of 14-year-old Lily Owens in 1960s South Carolina is getting a musical treatment as part of Vassar and New York Stage and Film's Powerhouse Theater season. Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage (Sweat) pens the book, while Tony winner Duncan Sheik (Spring Awakening) and Tony nominee Susan Birkenhead (Jelly's Last Jam) lend the piece brand-new music and lyrics, respectively. Hear the collaborators offer their take on the project (in performances from July 27 through 29) and discuss how they plan to make it sing.
