Catching Up with Peter and the Starcatcher
On January 20, Peter and the Starcatcher, the five-time Tony Award-winning stage adaptation of Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson’s prequel to Peter Pan, packed up the H.M.S. Neverland and sailed from Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theatre to New World Stages, a few blocks away, where it reopened on March 18. But just what goes into a move of this nature? We quizzed Donyale Werle, the show’s award-winning scenic designer, about how the magic is made in theaters of all sizes, and exactly what it takes to transplant a production from a 1,069-seat auditorium to a house that holds only 499.
