American english has changed many English word endings from "re" to "er" i.e. sabre to saber and centre to center. It is simply an americanized version of the word. Also, "er", I believe, most often refers to movie cinemas, and "re" refers mostly to plays and the buildings in which they are performed. Either way both are completely legit.

This is for Brooklynlizzie, the Krupke song was originally written after Riff dies, but I agree that makes no sense, and "cool" is sung by Riff so it can't be after he dies.
